Hands for HabitatOrange County Schools Wins Honorable Mention in 2011 Magna Awards

The Orange County (N.C.) Schools have been named an honorable mention recipient in the American School Board Journal’s (ASBJ) 17th annual Magna Awards program.

Orange County Schools are being honored in the 5,000 to 20,000 enrollment category. The district is partnering with Habitat for Humanity on a student service project entitled Hands for Habitat. Students in Orange County’s award-winning construction technology program built a green-certified Habitat home. The district was awarded a $5,000 grant to assist teachers with incorporating the curriculum into their classrooms. Advanced Placement Environmental Science classes learned about green construction, while fourth-graders wrote to state legislators about affordable housing. The community rallied to raise more than $35,000 to build the home.  Read More...

“I am both excited and nervous about this position,” he said via e-mail Tuesday. “I have never been in such a position, which makes it all the more exciting. I am nervous at the same time though, because I realize the level of responsibility that comes with it.” Read More...
