Science Department

The Science department at Orange High School offers a variety of course offerings and extracurricular activities for students. The table below shows our course offerings with the grade levels indicated for each. Students must satisfy the state requirement for three science courses (Biology, an Earth/Environmental Science course and a physical science course) for graduation. We encourage you to read the biographical information about each science faculty member below.

The Science Faculty

Becky Smith - Science Department Chairperson
  • Currently teaching Honors Biology 2, Advanced Placement Biology, and Honors Biology.
  • She has also taught Biology, Chemistry, Honors Chemistry and Advanced Biology at OHS.
  • BS degree in Biology from the University of Michigan in 1976 with minors in Chemistry and Physical Science.
  • Teaching certificate from the University of Michigan in 1977.
  • MS degree in Biology, 1981 from the University of Michigan.
  • Honored to receive 6 grants awarded by outside groups to fund science materials while at OHS.
  • Mrs. Smith currently serves as OHS Science department chair, a position she has held since 1995.
  • Current member of the scholarship committee, Curriculum Mapping Leadership Team and Calendar development committee for OCS.
  • Former Advisor of the science club and Science Olympiad Team.
  • Mrs. Smith joined the faculty of OHS in 1992. Before that, she taught in Florida and Michigan.
Greg Brooks
  • Mr. Greg Brooks graduated from Ohio University in 1977 with a degree in Biological Sciences.
  • Currently teaching Earth/Environmental Science in the Panther Academy
  • Joined OHS staff in the fall of 2008 after moving from Ohio, where he previously taught.
  • Master's degree received in 1979 in Secondary Education
  • Involved at OHS as a football coach and FCA advisor
Beverly Confer
  • Currently teaching Chemistry, and Honors Chemistry.
  • Will teach Honors Chemistry 2 and AP Chemistry next year.
  • Has also taught Physical Science at OHS.
  • BS in 1977 in Science education from NC State University (Honors graduate).
  • Teaching certification with a chemistry minor in 1983.
  • Currently Mrs. Confer is the faculty advisor for the Science Olympiad team.
Nina Morley Daye
  • Currently teaches Honors Physics, AP Physics, Forensics, Earth Science, and Advanced Placement Earth/Environmental Science
  • Has also taught Biology and Physical Science.
  • BS degree (1979) from Appalachian State University with a major in Biology and minors in secondary education and mathematics.
  • MED degree in Science Education from NC State University (1997)
  • Mrs. Daye was honored with the 1977 Presidential Award for Teaching Secondary Science for North Carolina and also was the Tandy Technology Teacher in 1997.
  • She is a nationally board certified teacher (AYA-science in physics)
  • She is the faculty advisor for the OCS FIRST Robotics Team 587 which travels to state and national competitions.
  • Mrs. Daye is also a member of the RW4L Literacy Team.
  • She has been teaching at OHS since 1981.
  • Mrs. Daye served as department chairman of the science department form 1988 to 1991
  • She has received two NASA $6000.00 grants, three NC Bright Ideas $2000.00 grants and more than seven other grants to support science education at Orange High School.
  • Mrs. Daye acts as a Physics Teaching Resource Agent (a Nationwide group) 1986-present.
  • Mrs. Daye is currently a Kenan Fellow which involves summer work and training.
  • In 2008, she received District Five NCSTA Outstanding Science Teaching award.
Emily Maxwell
  • Currently teaching Chemistry and Physical Science at OHS
  • Ms. Maxwell joined our staff in the fall of 2009
  • She graduated from North Texas State University in 1975 with a major in Biology and a minor in Chemistry.
  • In 1978, she received her Masters degree in science education from The University of Texas at Dallas.
  • Ms. Maxwell also has an MS degree in Marine Science from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1990 and a second BS degree in Geosciences from the University of Texas at Dallas in 1985.
  • She has taught locally in Chapel Hill and at the School of Science and Math and also in Texas.
Elizabeth Mayo
  • Currently teaching Biology, Honors Biology, and Honors Anatomy and Physiology
  • Mrs. Mayo joined OHS faculty in the fall of 1994.
  • Graduated from St. Augustine's College with a BS degree in 1968
  • Mrs. Mayo serves as a member of the OHS Governance Committee representing the science department.
  • She is a member of the school's scholarship committee.
  • Mrs. Mayo serves as a co-advisor to the Upward Bound program, administered through UNC-Chapel Hill.
Greg Randall
  • Currently teaching Biology at OHS.
  • Graduated from UNC Chapel Hill with a degree in Biology in 1993.
  • Received his Masters of education in Biology in 2000 from UNC Greensboro
  • Joined OHS staff in the fall of 2004
  • Served for 1 1/2 years as Dean of Students at OHS.
  • Former US Air Force pararescueman (1993-1997)
Teresa Whitfield
  • Currently teaching Earth/Environmental Science, Honors Earth/Environmentsl Science, and Biology at OHS
  • Mrs. Whitfield joined us fall of 2007 after teaching in Rockingham County.
  • She graduated from Rockingham Community College in 1995 with an Associate's degree in science.
  • Mrs. Whitfield earned her BS degree in Biology from UNCG in 1997.
