K-12 Math Education

Orange County Schools is pleased to present a rigorous program of study in mathematics for students at all grade levels. Our goal is to provide a comprehensive course of study that provides a complete foundation of skills and concepts. From this, our hope is that every student will pursue advanced studies in mathematics in preparation for joining the workforce or attending post high school studies.

Our programs in mathematics are built on the principle that students must build a firm foundation of skills and knowledge. Each grade level presents specific topics to build these skills as determined by the North Carolina Standard Course of Study. This is done with the use of engaging activities that are relevant to the real world. Each program is grounded in the use of inquiry methods that help students reach deep understandings of mathematics and science concepts.

The mathematics curriculum for all K-8 classrooms is based on building proficiency in all 5 strands of mathematics: Numbers and operations, Geometry, Measurement, Algebra and Data Analysis and Probability. Concepts are built throughout each grade level in a manner that deepens both understanding as well as fluency in using mathematics.
