Goal 1:
Orange County Schools will implement Professional Learning Communities as the framework for increasing collaboration among the stakeholders and ensuring that diverse needs of students are addressed by the district and the individual schools.

 Strategies:

  • Create Professional Learning Communities K-12 and advisor/advisee programs  9-12 by Fall 2007 to foster stronger connections between students and teachers, students and students, and teachers and teachers.

  • Conduct a study to examine equity among the K-5, 6-8, 9-12 schools by reviewing programs such as foreign language, course offerings, AIG service delivery, etc. with a report to the Board of Education with the findings by June 2007.

  • Develop a plan for transition of students from PreK to K and refine plans for transition from grade 5 to middle school and from grade 8 to high school by Fall 2007.

  • Develop pacing documents, curriculum guides, common assessments, and rubrics for assessing progress by Fall 2008.  Common assessments will be consistently administered during the 2008-2009 school year.

  • Conduct an examination of the Alternative School programming to determine the best educational practices to implement by Fall 2007.  A report will be made to the Board of Education in December 2006 with the proposed recommendations.

  • Investigate the development of distance learning classrooms at each high school to accommodate low incidence classes with a report on the findings to the Board of Education by January  2007.

Goal 2:    
Orange County Schools will provide professional development to enable teachers to employ effective instructional strategies, integrate curriculum, differentiate instruction and enable administrators to be strong instructional leaders.

Strategies:

  • Complete professional development for all K-5 and 6-8 Language Arts and Social Studies teachers in research based instructional strategies in reading and writing by Fall 2007.

  • Complete Classroom Walkthrough training for all building level administrators and develop a process for assessing the use of data collected to improve instructional practices by Fall 2007.

  • Complete professional development for 75% of teachers to support integration of the curriculum and differentiation of instruction by Fall 2008.

Goal 3:    
Orange County Schools will on an annual basis, collect and use a variety of data to make district and school decisions regarding the instructional needs of all students.

 Strategies:

  • Complete the work of the Closing the Achievement Gap Task Force and present a set of recommendations to the Board for consideration by May 2007.

  • Conduct surveys/needs assessments to determine need for, feasibility of, and expenses related to increasing participation in AP and IB courses and increasing offering in CTE and other electives during the 2007-2008 school year.   Recommendations will be provided to the Board by March 2007.

 

Goal 4:    
Orange County Schools will align curriculum and instruction and extra-curricular opportunities to skills and understandings needed in the twenty-first century and in the workforce.

Strategies:

  • Conduct focus group sessions to identify essential skills needed for the 21st Century and provide a report to the Board on the feedback from the business community in June 2007. 

  • Conduct awareness sessions on 21st Century Learning Skills for all instructional staff by December 2007.
