College Entrance Exams General Information

ü  Recommend taking PSAT junior year—October (last chance to practice & receive feedback)

ü  Recommend taking 2 of the following SAT I: Reasoning Test or ACT or both during the second semester Junior year

ü  Recommend taking SAT I or ACT during fall semester senior year if needed

Ø  SAT 1: Reasoning

o    Tests in areas of Critical Reading (800 points), Mathematics--Algebra I, II and Geometry (800 points), and Writing—Grammar and essay (800 points)

o    Visit www.collegeboard.com for registration, information, and preparation. CRHS has also purchased additional tutorial information see guidance counselor or English teacher.

Ø  ACT

o    Tests in areas of English, Reading, Math, Science and Writing (0-36 scores)

o    Visit www.actstudent.org for registration, information, and preparation.

o   Additional score reporting--$10

§  Fee waivers available for regular administration only and for students who demonstrate need (free & reduced lunch, Medicare/Medicaid, etc.)—two waivers available for qualified  students.

o   Standby Fee --$47 fee plus $41 late fee ($88 total)

v  Score Reporting—All SAT scores must be reported directly by College Board.

o   Each test session includes 4 college reports

o   Each additional report=$10.00

Ø  SAT II: Subject Tests

o   See above test date information (most tests are available at the same time—see website for specific details)

o   Cost--$21 for Basic Subject Test, $21 for Language & Listening Tests, & $10 for all other subject tests

 

Ø  Compass Test—NC Community College Placement Exam

o   Special—October 26th—CRHS students will be transported to the Durham Tech Campus to take the placement exam, if you are interested see Ms. Evans in the Career Center

o   By appointment through the Community College Campus

o   Taken on the Community College Campus

o   Free of Charge

Ø  Internet Resources

o    College Foundation of North Carolina—CFNC an internet site designed to assist high school students with all your college needs. Visit www.cfnc.org  for resume building, career searching, college searching, applying online to colleges, and financing colleges. (It’s your taxpaying dollars at work)

o    www.Colleges.collegeToolkit.com another website designed to assist in the college search process.

v  Does your profile match up with a particular school’s freshman profile? – go to college search by name, enter the college or university, a table will pop-up, select admissions and all admission ratings and rankings will be available. Match your profile to theirs.

v  Scholarship search is also available

o    www.collegeboard.com

 

College Visits

1.     Plan a college visit—contact the admissions office to arrange a visit.

a.     Open House/Tours—admissions overview, honors programs, housing, financial aid, athletics, campus life, departments/courses, etc.

2.       Items to consider on your tour—

a.     Bring an unofficial transcript along with you

b.     Atmosphere

c.     Size of campus

d.     Students on campus

e.     Cleanliness

f.     Attend the information sessions—students & parents

g.     Speak to someone in the department you have an interest, visit the labs, classrooms, and facilities for the major

h.     Information regarding Honors Programs, if interested

i.      Visit freshman dorm options

j.      Eat in the campus eatery

k.     Ask about extra-curricular activities, athletics, cultural arts , or other areas of interest

l.      Visit the student union or gathering area

m.    Talk to students about what they think of the school, what they about out it or dislike about it, what they do on the weekends, etc.

n.     Make an appointment with admissions if you have questions or concerns regarding your application criteria

o.     Arrange a meeting with the financial aid office for information on aid, grants, scholarships, other financial programs on campus

p.     Learn about campus safety issues

q.     Ask about academic advisory

r.     Ask about health related matters

s.     Find out the return rate for freshman

t.     Pick up campus newspaper to learn more about the campus culture and activities

3.     If you are unable to visit campus, find on the internet virtual tours
