The Media Center operates on flexible
scheduling. Flexible scheduling means:
- The school library media center
and the computer lab are accessible to students, teachers and staff when needed.
- The media center resources will
support, supplement, and enhance teaching and learning.
- Flexibility will enable the media
coordinator and the instructional technologist to plan with teachers and staff
for instructional purposes.
- The media and technology specialists
will be available to guide students in their search for information and resources,
thus fostering independence and life-long learning.

How to Sign Up
- The objective at CRHS is that
the center will be available when you need it, on a first-come, first-serve
basis. You should use the calendar on the Cedar Ridge High School Website
(http://www.orange.k12.nc.us:82/crhs/media)
to check for availability. If the center is open, you should email the librarian
or media assistant to sign you up. There is no set period of time for giving
notice; however, if you are planning a research project, particularly when
the entire class is researching similar topics, it is wise to book early.
- Teachers must accompany their
classes and remain with them at all times. You are expected to monitor and
supervise your students while you are in the center.
- The computer lab also operates
on flexible scheduling. Likewise, you should check the link on our website
for availability and email for sign-up. The lab is intended for class use
only, and teachers are expected to remain in supervision of their students
while they are in the computer lab. If students in the lab need the resources
of the media center, they should be sent to the media specialist or the media
assistant who will supervise them.
- Flexible scheduling means that
students are allowed to walk-in from classes on a need basis. Teachers should
call first to check for availability. Calling FIRST helps
all of us keep track of students and prevent them from wandering the halls.
Please send only two students at a time. If space is available, walk-ins will
be accepted. Walk-ins must have a written pass from the teacher. When the
student returns to class, his pass will be dated and signed by the media staff.
All students who request to come to the media center should be screened by
teachers to ensure that they intend to use the media center for educational
purposes. Walk-ins will be served in the media center area only. Individual
students will not be allowed in the computer lab without the supervision of
a teacher.
How to Reserve Equipment
- The media staff recognizes that
students need supplies in order to work; however, such needs are the students'
responsibility. We will not have school supplies to give to students. Teachers
are encouraged to make sure that their students have the necessary equipment
(disks, paper, pens, folders, index cards) when they come to the library.
A copy machine is available for reference copying at 10 cents per page.
- The media staff recognizes its
responsibility to manage equipment. All instructional equipment (wireless
labs, camcorders/tripods, CD/tape players/recorders, digital cameras, data
projectors, AV material, projection screens, Smart TV remotes, SmartBoards)
are on loan to teachers through library circulation and/or the technology
specialist. This equipment is acquired for instructional/educational purposes
only. Personal use of equipment is not allowed. Teachers may reserve equipment
by emailing the media staff. IMPORTANT: To provide
the necessary security, teachers should lock borrowed equipment in a secure
place whenever they leave their rooms. ALL ELECTRONICS MUST
BE RETURNED TO THE MEDIA CENTER AT THE END OF EACH INSTRUCTIONAL SCHOOL DAY.
Professional Library Use
- A professional library is available
in the Media Center for teacher use. Maintained by the media staff, the library
contains materials from NCDPI, professional magazines, newspapers, and journals.
Teachers may reserve the area by emailing the media staff. Professional library
reservations are posted on the school calendar.

Operational Hours
-
The Literacy
Project report of 1999/2000 indicated that students need a quiet, orderly
place in the school to read, study, and research. The Media Staff this year
is limited to one specialist and one assistant who are often obligated to
other responsibilities after school.
The operational hours for 2007-08 are:
BEFORE
8:35
WITH LIBRARY OR TEACHER PASS
AFTER
SCHOOL MON-THURS
(UNTIL 4:30 PM)
FRIDAY
(UNTIL 4 PM)
Check-Out Policies
- Students must be enrolled to check
out materials. Books are checked out for a two-week period and may be renewed.
Reference books, videos, and equipment cannot be checked out by students,
but teachers may check out these materials for classroom use. Fair use copyright
law allows one legal copy of reference material for study and research. A
copy machine is provided for this purpose. Copies cost 10 cents per page.
- Magazines and newspapers are
available in the Media Center for faculty and student leisure reading. Current
issues should not be removed from the library shelves. Cedar Ridge High School
will replace the Readers' Guide to Periodical Literature with licensed online
databases for research purposes. The State of North Carolina through NC Live,
accessible through the public library, and NC WiseOwl provides this technology;
therefore, periodicals and newspapers will not be archived at Cedar Ridge.
When past issues are removed from leisure reading areas, they will be available
to teachers and students for classroom and educational resources. Teachers
may reserve a particular magazine or newspaper by emailing the media staff.
- Overdue fines are charged at
the rate of 10 cents per day. Notices will be generated and sent to English
teachers at the time of interim reports and report cards.
IMPORTANT: OVERDUE BOOK FINES
WILL RESULT IN THE FOLLOWING:
- SENIORS WILL NOT
GRADUATE
- STUDENT LIBRARY ACCOUNTS
WILL BE BLOCKED FROM FURTHER CHECK-OUT.
- STUDENTS WILL NOT
BE ABLE TO RECEIVE TRANSCRIPTS
