Book Club

Together we will explore Stephen R. Covey’s book The Leader in Me.  This book was selected based on a parent forum we held in October. During this forum we discussed the skills our children will need in order to be successful in life. There was a continuous theme that emerged during that session that included developing strong character, leadership skills, adaptability, and problem-solving skills. Our children will have careers that don't yet exist and use technologies that have not been invented. So how do we prepare them for this world that we do not yet understand?

We sought an answer to the question above along with a way to respond to the desire of our families to strengthen 21st Century Skills for our students. Stephen R. Covey’s Leadership model for schools continuously appeared at the forefront of what is working in schools. So much so, that we felt it would be a valuable use of our time to read and discuss this book as a school community.

Our book club will begin in January 2012 and we estimate that there will be 4 sessions or meetings. We will form several small groups based on the availability of participants. This will allow us flexibility in scheduling meeting times to accommodate as many participants as possible. It will also provide us an opportunity to keep our book club group sizes small. Hopefully this will make discussing the book and ideas more intimate and comfortable for participants. In addition, several copies of The Leader in Me are available for loan to participants.

We invite you to be a part of this collaborative effort to improve the future of our children. To reserve your space in our book club please email Crystal.Scillitani@orange.k12.nc.us.

All parents, grand-parents, family members & community leaders are welcome to participate.

Sincerely,
Crystal Scillitani, Principal
