Homework Tips
Provide a quiet place, free from distractions.
Keep extra supplies, such as loose leaf
paper, pencils, etc...on hand.
Try to keep a regular time for completing
homework (right after school, after dinner, etc...)
Check your child's homework folder daily.
It is okay to help your child if he or
she has questions, just don't do it for them.
Help your child study for tests a little
each day. Reviewing spelling words and math facts should be a part of
the daily routine.
Home Learning Activities
Play educational games with your child,
such as Scrabble, Trivial Pursuit, jigsaw puzzles, etc...
Cook together, following recipe directions
and measuring ingredients is a fun way to learn!
When grocery shopping, discuss kinds
of foods and how much they weigh.
When shopping, discuss costs and cash
back.
When traveling, read signs, notice landmarks,
distance, time, etc...
READ with and to your child; newspapers,
magazines, anything!
Build Reading Skills at Home
Take your child to the public library.
Help your child get a library card. Find out if there are any special
programs or reading clubs at your library. Ask the children's librarian
to recommend a good book for your child.
Do follow-up reading after watching
a television show
Give your child books as gifts.
Show your child that you like to
read.
Read aloud to your child. After
reading, discuss the story.
Provide a special shelf or box for
your child to store books.
Set aside a special time to read
every day.
Talk to your child. The more words
he/she uses naturally in conversation, the more words will have
meaning when he/she sees them on the printed page.
Pay attention when your child is
talking with you.
